Midweek @ Highlands

The study of the Scriptures is at the center of everything we do here at Highlands. That said, the primary vehicle by which we pursue the value of Teaching is our Wednesday gathering called "Midweek @ Highlands."

We gather as a church family every Wednesday night every fall from August through November, then again in the winter and spring from January through April, to connect with one another in fellowship and to grow deep together through the study and application of the Bible.

Programs for Jr. High and Sr. High students begin at 6 pm, with programs for children beginning at 6:15 pm. The adult worship and teaching time begins at 6:30 pm and all programs conclude at 7:30 pm.  A nursery is provided from 6 – 7:30 pm.

Midweek @ Highlands  Adult Studies Fall 2010 Lineup

 August 18-September 22

Living True in a Confusing World - The Book of Jude in  Room 301
In this short letter to the churches, Jude (the half-brother of Jesus) teaches us that a part of loving the Church is helping people stay true to the truth while living amidst so many confusing messages.  In the first six weeks this fall, Pastor Wheat will not only be looking at the message of Jude – but also helping us understand it in light of the confusing messages we struggle with in our lives today.

Finding Balance and Boundaries in Modern Life - Room 211
God didn't make us to be so fragmented in our lives.  In this class taught by Mike Hillerman we will look at reasons for and ways to gain more balance in our Christian living.  Mike will us through the book Boundaries (by John Townsend and Henry Cloud) as a source and will expound Scriptural teaching on what is truly important and therefore worth becoming priorities.

Apparent Privilege - Parenting 101 in Room 210
What does the Bible say about parenting?  How do I help my kids' stand strong in their faith?  "I take my kids to church. Is that enough?"  "Teach the Bible? I wouldn't know where to start."  "Do my children treasure Christ above all else?  If you have asked these questions, this class is for you!
Parents, you have the greatest privilege of your lives in front of you every day: raising your children. Pointing your children to Christ, modeling the Gospel, and talking about God's grace shouldn't be a burden. It is a privilege. A Parent Privilege provides biblical understanding and the latest research to encourage you in the unparalleled opportunity you have to be the primary influencers of your children. This class is open to parents with children of all ages and is taught by John Nordan.

Age of Opportunity - Parenting 301 in Room 209
Parents, are the teen years there to just make your life a hassle?  OR are the prime opportunities to connect with, listen to, and nurture your kids?  The teenage year are definitely challenging years for the parents and the teens, but this is not an excuse for merely "surviving" these years.  It is an opportunity for YOU to give your child positive input as the primary influencer that God has made you in their life.
Join us for this class taught by Kevin Simpson designed for dads to come together and wrestle biblically with the challenges and joys of these years.  This class is open to dads with kids of all ages.

September 29-November 10

It's Not About Me! - Living Life Beyond Yourself in Room 301
We all struggle with being self-centered and self-focused. And yet the good news of the Gospel is that we are released from being consumed in our own worlds in order to live the life and purpose God has for each and everyone of us. In this study Lee Hutchings will be taking us through the biblical teaching as well as our own Reformed heritage on how to experience the joy, love, and purpose of God that comes when we recognize that we were made for something  bigger than ourselves.

Relationships: A Mess Worth Making- Room 211
In Relationships: A Mess Worth Making (based on the Book by Paul David Tripp and Tim Lane) we will explore the problems that plague many of our close relationships. Mike Hillerman will help us  look at the Scriptural teaching and  will discuss these eight observations to help us understand relationships and how God uses them in our lives.  You were made for relationships. Come find out how to gain and improve yours!

The "Storyline" Gospel Conversation—Room 212
Pastor Joseph Wheat will be leading this evangelism training.   We will use a way of sharing the gospel that he developed over several years.  The Storyline, though being a simple outline of the gospel, seeks to foster conversation with the person considering Christ.  This first class will be limited to 20 people.  The class will become an email group to continue encouragement and accountability beyond the training.  Commitment to faithful attendance and memorization is required.

Gospel-Powered Parenting- Parenting 201 in Room 210
The purpose of this class is to focus on the gospel as the most important power in parenting.  This class will be a continuation of the discussing started in Parenting 101.  The gospel is the transforming power to be an effective parent.  The gospel needs to be at the center of everything we do as parents.  The gospel really is the foundation in all that we do as parents.  Tim Challies notes, "We cannot effectively teach or discipline or care for our children if we ignore the gospel."

Join us as we go deeper into the joy of parenting.  This class is open to parents with children of all ages and is taught by John Nordan.
